Globe Urges Public to Protect Fiber Infrastructure

Globe has converted over 600 towns nationwide to full fiber connectivity, eliminating copper infrastructure in these areas. This initiative aims to provide residents with high-speed internet for remote work, online learning, small businesses, and government services.

The removal of copper lines from the network is also part of Globe’s sustainability efforts. However with fiber intended to deter illegal salvaging activities, it remains as a concern.

Fiber Cable Cuts Persist Despite No Resale Value

Despite the transition to fiber, which has no resale value, incidents of intentional cable cuts continue. Historically, 40% of the initial 425 towns that transitioned to fiber experienced intentional cuts. Even in areas with a history of copper theft, 63% still reported fiber-related incidents.

Globe emphasizes that cutting fiber lines provides no financial gain but can lead to widespread disconnections affecting homes, schools, businesses, and government offices for extended periods.

Public Assistance Requested to Prevent Cable Damage

Joel Agustin, Globe Head of Service Planning and Engineering, stated that fiber has no copper and no resale value, and cutting it only harms dependent communities. Globe is requesting public assistance to safeguard these lines.

To protect connectivity, Globe encourages residents to:

  • Report suspicious activity near fiber lines or utility poles to local authorities.
  • Support community watch programs and barangay patrols.
  • Collaborate with local officials to incorporate infrastructure protection into ordinances and local plans.

These efforts complement Globe’s ongoing collaborations with local government units and national agencies focused on education, prevention, and rapid response to maintain infrastructure integrity.
