Look at any modern factory floor, smart city, or advanced hospital. What do you see? Sensors. Everywhere. Cameras, LiDAR, ultrasound probes, temperature gauges—an absolute explosion of data sources.
This sensor flood is the lifeblood of “smart industry” and modern medicine. We’re using it to power automation, run AI-driven quality checks, and feed machine learning models for predictive maintenance. But this data tsunami is creating a massive compute bottleneck.
The trusty Industrial PC (IPC) that has run factory lines for decades is straining under the load. As developers, we’re being asked to integrate more sensors, more AI, and more analytics, all while keeping systems responsive, power-efficient, and compact. The old way of doing things is breaking.
The Bottleneck: When “Real-Time” Isn’t Real
Let’s take a common example: an advanced medical imaging system.
An ultrasound probe generates a massive, continuous stream of data. This data needs to be:
- Ingested from the sensor.
- Processed using complex algorithms.
- Analyzed by an AI inference engine to spot anomalies.
- Rendered on a high-resolution display for the cardiologist.
- Sent to the hospital’s network (IT) from the operational device (OT).
All of this must happen in milliseconds.
The conventional approach is to use a powerful x86-based IPC as the “brain” and plug in an FPGA-based accelerator card over the PCIe bus to handle the heavy lifting.
The problem? Latency.
Every time data moves from the sensor to the IPC’s main memory, across the PCIe bus to the accelerator card, gets processed, and then travels back across the bus to the CPU and display, you’re adding precious milliseconds of delay. In a system that requires a real-time robotic response or a fluid medical image, this latency makes a deterministic, real-time response almost impossible.
This integration is also an engineering nightmare. It’s a constant, power-hungry balancing act. We see this in autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) in warehouses. More processing power for navigation and vision means less battery life. Adding a bigger battery adds cost, weight, and charging time. It’s an inefficient cycle.
The Solution: Stop Moving Data, Start Integrating Compute
Instead of treating the CPU, the real-time sensor processing (FPGA), and the AI engines as separate components on a motherboard, the new approach is to merge them.
This is the promise of adaptive compute platforms.

- x86 processor cores (to run your OS and leverage that massive software ecosystem).
- AI engines (for high-performance, low-power inference).
- Real-time processing units and programmable logic (to talk directly to sensors).

When you integrate all this onto one platform, you eliminate the PCIe bottleneck. The data from a sensor can be routed directly to an AI engine or a real-time processing core without ever having to take a slow detour through the main CPU.
This consolidation onto a single board or chip delivers a powerful one-two punch: it dramatically slashes latency while also lowering overall system power consumption and size.
