It’s becoming increasingly difficult to stand out as a content creator in the age of social media.  Everyone with a blog, some social profiles, or even just an email list knows how hard it is to get new people to come to see your stuff. There is so much noise and so many interesting things happening every second, it can be easy for your work to get lost in the shuffle. The good news: there are some simple tricks you can implement to help ensure that your content stands out and gets seen by more people.

Write interesting headlines

Don’t be afraid to step outside of the box, but try not to get too crazy, either. Your headline should grab someone’s attention while still making sense. You want to invite them in without confusing them. A good rule for this is simple: if you were going to tweet about your own article, would it make sense? If so, you’re heading in the right direction. This is the best way to go about writing a good blog post title. Remember that just because you want something doesn’t mean that it’s interesting to other people as well.

ABR streaming

This is a simple trick that will increase the number of people who actually get to see your stuff. It’s also cool enough that it will grab someone’s attention if they hear about this for the first time. The adaptive technology looks at how well your connection is holding up, and sends only the highest quality version, while adaptive bitrate streaming allows you to automatically adjust your video quality according to someone’s connection speed. As it gets worse, the video quality decreases as well, ensuring that your viewers still get to see what they came for.

Be careful with social media

Now, don’t misunderstand: social media is an excellent way to reach a lot of people and promote what you’re doing. However, just because something is free and readily available doesn’t mean you should waste it. When someone pays for something, they tend to value it more than if they got it for free. The same applies here: if a company is willing to pay a hefty sum of money to advertise during the Superbowl, their ad better not suck! Spend extra time on your Facebook posts, Twitter tweets, etc. to make sure they are worth the promotion you’re giving them. Additionally, if something comes across as spammy or untrustworthy, people are less likely to click it.

Be prepared for the unexpected

It doesn’t happen very often anymore, but sometimes someone will book a live show, and then cancel it. When that happens, you can offer the ticket to your social media followers in exchange for them liking/following you, etc. It’s also a great way of keeping your name out there when there’s no big event coming up next week. This works much better when you have a lot of followers on your social media profile. If someone with 10,000 people following them cancels something, they can just give out 5 tickets and still cover the cost! The same can be done with blog posts and other content.

Conventional marketing is still a thing

Influencers have been getting bigger and bigger for years now, so don’t be one of those people who neglects this. You can use electronic press kits (EPKs) to reach out directly to people that might be interested in what you’re doing. If someone has 1,000,000 subs on YouTube, they probably also have some other means of getting their stuff seen by more than 1,000,000 people at a time. They can make something go viral by sheer force, and you should at least try and reach out to them. Also,  if they have a show or something, always try to be the first to buy/get tickets, because they might mention you in their ticket giveaways.

Don’t neglect email marketing

Email marketing is still one of the most popular ways to get your message out there. Some people might delete a Facebook notification without even reading it, but they won’t do that with an email! It’s all about making sure you have quality content for them to read when they do click on things. If you’re not good at writing, hire someone who is. Once they do click, though, it’s all yours: people are five times more likely to buy something from an email than something from social media. even if it’s just a newsletter with some links to your posts or something. You can even include an email signup form on your social media profiles.

So there you have it! Whether it’s through your blog, Twitter, or Facebook page, these simple and effective techniques will help you get noticed and actually seen by the people who matter.  If you want to stand out and reach more people, these five simple tricks will help.
