Goodbye OTPs? Globe and BPI Test a Safer, Faster Way to Bank

Globe and the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) are testing a new technology that could make One-Time Passwords (OTPs) a thing of the past. They are calling this project a “Proof of Concept” for something called Silent Network Authentication.

Here is what that means for you:

The Problem with OTPs

Currently, when you do online banking, you often have to wait for an SMS code (OTP) to prove it’s really you. This can be:

  • Annoying: You have to switch apps and memorize codes.
  • Risky: Scammers often try to trick people into giving up these codes to steal money.

The Solution: “Silent” Verification

Globe and BPI are testing a new method where the security check happens automatically in the background.

Instead of sending you a text, the BPI app talks directly to the Globe mobile network. The network instantly confirms, “Yes, this is the correct phone number and the real user,” without you having to type anything.

Why This Matters:

  • Less Fraud: Since there is no code sent to your phone, scammers can’t ask you for it.
  • Faster Banking: You don’t have to wait for a text message or type in numbers. It happens instantly.
  • Better Security: It uses “G Verify,” Globe’s advanced security tool, to ensure the person holding the phone is actually the account owner.

What’s Next?

Right now, this is a successful test. Globe and BPI have proven the technology works.

  • Globe says this is part of their goal to make digital life safer for Filipinos.
  • BPI says they are committed to using the best technology to protect clients while making banking easier.

While this isn’t available to the general public just yet, this test is a major step toward a future where banking is both faster and much harder for scammers to hack.
