AMD has published its latest Corporate Responsibility (CR) Report, showcasing significant progress towards its corporate responsibility goals for 2023. The report, a comprehensive overview of the company’s efforts in environmental sustainability, digital impact, diversity, and supply chain responsibility, underscores AMD’s commitment to addressing some of the most pressing global challenges.
Key Achievements in Environmental Sustainability
AMD’s approach to sustainability in 2023 centered on innovative chip design, emphasizing performance and energy efficiency. The company’s pioneering chiplet architecture, particularly in the production of its 4th Gen AMD EPYC CPUs, led to significant environmental benefits. By employing 12 separate compute chiplets instead of a single monolithic die, AMD saved approximately 132,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent—more than twice the company’s annual operational carbon footprint.
The report highlights AMD’s ambitious goal to achieve a 30x energy efficiency improvement in processors and accelerators for high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) servers from 2020 to 2025. Notably, AMD solutions power more than half of the top 50 most energy-efficient supercomputers listed on the latest Green500.
Across its global operations, AMD reduced carbon emissions by 24.5% since 2020 and increased the share of energy sourced from renewable sources to 40%, up from 18% in 2020. The company also collaborated with its foundry partners to reduce water withdrawals, with a 34% increase in recycled water usage in wafer manufacturing.
Advancing Scientific Research and STEM Education
AMD’s commitment to advancing science and education is evident in its continued support for research institutions and educational initiatives. Since 2020, AMD has donated technology to over 150 universities and non-profit organizations through its AI and HPC Fund, benefiting approximately 61 million people worldwide. In 2023, the company expanded its STEM education efforts by establishing a new AMD Learning Lab at Maynooth University in Dublin, Ireland.
Empowering Employees and Communities
The CR Report also highlights AMD’s dedication to fostering an inclusive workplace. The 2023 AMDer Survey revealed that 92% of employees believe AMD creates an environment where individuals from diverse backgrounds can thrive. Additionally, the company launched the “Advancing Women in Tech” program, which saw over 230 women complete a comprehensive learning experience aimed at supporting women in technical careers.
In 2023, AMD employees logged more than 25,000 hours of volunteer work, furthering the company’s commitment to community engagement.
Strengthening Industry Collaboration and Supply Chain Resilience
AMD continues to strengthen its partnerships across the value chain, focusing on human rights, environmental sustainability, and supply chain resilience. The company has expanded its due diligence efforts to mitigate adverse human rights impacts and has worked closely with suppliers to enhance education on environmental and human rights issues. By 2023, 84% of AMD Manufacturing Suppliers had undergone Responsible Business Alliance audits, and 95% of suppliers across Malaysia, Taiwan, and Japan participated in forced labor prevention workshops.
