Revealed during AMD’s GDC 2024 presentation on “High Performance Rendering in Snowdrop Using AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3),” AMD FSR 3.1 introduces significant enhancements, fresh capabilities, and updates.

Improvements in Image Upscaling Quality:

  • Enhanced temporal stability during motion and stillness, resulting in reduced flickering, shimmering, and “Fizziness” around moving objects.
  • Reduction in ghosting and improved preservation of detail.

Decoupling of FSR 3 Upscaling from Frame Generation:

  • Enables FSR 3.1 frame generation technology to collaborate with other upscaling solutions.

Introduction of New AMD FidelityFX API:

  • Simplifies debugging for developers and ensures forward compatibility with future FSR updates.
  • Support for Vulkan® and Xbox Game Development Kit (GDK).

Developers can access AMD FSR 3.1 on GPUOpen in Q2, with integration into games slated for later this year.

Examples of Upscaling Quality Improvement in AMD FSR 3.1

The initial game to incorporate AMD FSR 3.1 enhancements is Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart by Insomniac Games, Nixxes Software, and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The update will integrate FSR 3.1 benefits, such as decoupling frame generation from upscaling and enhancing temporal upscaling image quality. Below are examples from Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart showcasing the upscaling improvements of FSR 3.1.

Recommendations for Utilizing AMD FSR 3 Frame Generation

As stated in prior AMD FSR 3 documentation, for optimal high-quality gaming experience when employing FSR 3 Frame Generation with any upscaling quality mode or the new “Native AA” mode, it is advised to maintain a minimum framerate of ~60 FPS before applying Frame Generation. This helps mitigate any latency introduced by the technology. Adjusting supported game settings, resolution, and FSR upscaling quality mode can aid in achieving this.

When using FSR 3 with a VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) display, it’s recommended to keep the framerate (with frame generation enabled) within the monitor’s refresh range to prevent screen tearing. Users may opt for the game’s built-in frame limiter or utilize V-Sync, although the latter may introduce latency and observable judder.

Enabling Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) in Windows® 11 (Settings > System > Display > Graphics Settings), is also recommended when using AMD FSR 3. HAGS is enabled in Windows 11 2022 Update on AMD Radeon™ RX 7900/7800/7700 Series Graphics Cards when using AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition™ 23.12.1 or higher.
