MSI at COMPUTEX 2023 resurrected the FROZR line-up – not for graphics cards but as a cooling solution for their Spatium series of high-performance SSDs.

We have two highlights here – well maybe three or four including the Spatium M570 PRO SSD itself.

Spatium M570 PRO FROZR+

Now starting off with the SSD itself, the M570 PRO is the company’s flagship PCIe Gen 5 SSD. It is equipped the PHISON E26 controller and is paired with state-of-the-art NAND to deliver 14 GB/s read and 12 GB/s write speeds (sequential) respectively.

If you felt like some PCIe Gen 4×4 SSDs are hot enough to warrant coolers, the PCIe Gen 5 SSDs are no different. This is where the FROZR+ comes in with its chunky heatsink and fan. This cooling solution allowed the Spatium M570 PRO to reach its specified speeds while maintaining a maximum thermal peak of about 44 ºC. That’s about 111.2 ºF for the imperial folks.

For scenarios or applications requiring a more quite operation, MSI also had the FROZR. This is the passive version of the FROZR+ that comes with dual 6 mm heat-pipes and is just about 10 ºC less effective over the active variant.

MSI also had the XPANDER PCIe 5.0 card at the show configured with two Spatium M570 PRO and FROZR coolers. It basically allows two PCIe 5.0 SSDs to work in unison.

With two Spatium M570 along with the XPANDER card, the configuration reaches about 22 GB/s read and 23 GB/s write speeds (sequential). I have not seen a higher number that day.

MSI’s storage solutions along with their coolers showed impressive feats with the PCIe Gen 5 interface. I cannot wait to see more after COMPUTEX.
