In a surprise reveal, developer 4A Games and publisher Deep Silver have officially announced Metro 2039, the fourth mainline entry in the post-apocalyptic franchise.
Scheduled for a Winter 2026 release, the title marks a return to the series’ roots, prioritizing tight, atmospheric survival horror over the expansive exploration seen in Metro Exodus. By moving the action back into the Moscow tunnels, the team aims to recapture the oppressive tension that defined the earlier games.
Narrative Evolution and Political Themes
The game is set in 2039, six years after the previous events, but shifts the perspective to a fully voiced lead protagonist. The narrative, written in collaboration with author Dmitry Glukhovsky, focuses on the Novoreich, a totalitarian regime led by legendary Spartan, Hunter.
This shift reflects a more mature, character-driven approach, exploring themes of resistance and the consequences of political apathy in a world where the monsters are no longer just the mutants on the surface.
Pushing the Limits of the 4A Engine
Technically, Metro 2039 is built on the latest iteration of the proprietary 4A Engine, featuring advanced ray-tracing and highly detailed, handcrafted environments. The reveal showcased “frozen stories” of those caught in the crossfire of the new regime, utilizing lighting and sound design to heighten the psychological horror.
4A Games emphasized that the level of environmental detail has been significantly increased to create the most visceral and immersive version of the Metro yet.
Metro 2039 is set to launch simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC through Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox on PC.
