MediaTek has announced the launch of its most powerful Chromebook processor to date – the Kompanio Ultra, marking a significant step forward in performance and efficiency for the Chromebook Plus category.
As the world’s leading supplier of Arm-based Chromebook processors by sales volume, MediaTek’s new offering builds on the success of its Kompanio series. The Kompanio Ultra is designed to meet the growing demands of both everyday users and professionals who require higher performance from lightweight, portable devices.
Performance and Efficiency at the Forefront
At the heart of the Kompanio Ultra is an advanced architecture featuring eight high-performance cores, including the latest Arm Cortex-X925, and more than 16 MB of total on-chip cache. According to MediaTek, the new chip delivers up to 18% faster performance compared to competing processors, targeting content creation, productivity, and even gaming.
Despite its performance capabilities, the Kompanio Ultra is engineered for efficiency. Built on a 3nm process, the chip is said to use around 50% less power than other flagship Chromebook processors, enabling thinner and quieter Chromebook designs with longer battery life.
Enhanced AI and Connectivity
The processor includes an NPU capable of 50 trillion operations per second (TOPS), enabling on-device AI processing for productivity and creative applications. This allows Chromebooks powered by Kompanio Ultra to handle demanding AI workloads without relying on a cloud connection.
In terms of connectivity, the processor supports both Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7, offering flexibility for device manufacturers to meet different performance and market needs.
Expanded Display and Multimedia Support
The Kompanio Ultra also enables support for dual 4K external displays, a feature aimed at enhancing productivity for users who work across multiple screens. It continues MediaTek’s focus on multimedia, with improved support for audio and video streaming, both live and recorded.
MediaTek positions the Kompanio Ultra as a flagship processor tailored for high-end Chromebook Plus devices. With its blend of performance, power efficiency, and AI capabilities, the chip represents MediaTek’s latest effort to expand its footprint in the Chromebook market while pushing the limits of what thin and light devices can offer.
