IOPS
The Kingston Dual Portable SSD demonstrates its NVMe-backed architecture in the CrystalDiskMark random 4K tests, delivering a respectable 39,225 IOPS read and 32,303 IOPS write in the RND4K Q32T16 workload.
Access Time

We observed a sequential latency of 7,997.18 μs at the highest depth (Q8T1), while random 4K access times remained well-controlled at 813.47 μs read and 988.02 μs write under the Q32T16 load. While performance predictably scales with file complexity – taking 61.22 seconds for the small-file intensive ‘Program’ test – the drive remains highly efficient for gaming assets, transferring a 5 GB game folder in 15.87 seconds. These figures confirm that while it is optimized for high-speed sequential transfers, it handles mixed-file workloads with much more agility than a standard flash drive.
Compression
The AS SSD Compression-Benchmark reveals that the Kingston Dual Portable is a stable drive that is largely unaffected by data compressibility. Read speeds remained remarkably flat, hovering consistently around the 982 MB/s mark after the initial ramp-up. Write performance showed slightly more variance, peaking at 976 MB/s but exhibiting periodic dips into the 810–850 MB/s range. This ‘saw-tooth’ pattern in writes suggests the controller is working hard to manage heat or background garbage collection during sustained transfers, rather than struggling with the compression level of the data itself.
Cache
Sustained performance is where many ‘thumb-drive’ style SSDs fail, but the Dual Portable SSD holds its ground well. While the read speeds show some oscillation (factoring in our main drive), the real highlight is the consistent write performance. By maintaining a flat 668–700 MB/s write speed across the entire test, this drive ensures that moving large video libraries or game folders won’t result in the ‘performance cliff’ (where speeds drop to double digits) often seen in cheaper flash storage.
Temperature
In terms of thermal management, the Kingston Dual Portable SSD performs admirably for its size. During idle, the drive maintains an internal temperature of 48 °C, which rises to 61 °C under a sustained heavy load. While the internal components get warm, the metallic chassis does an excellent job of heat dissipation; we measured a peak external surface temperature of just 41.1 °C. This ensures that even during long file transfers, the drive remains comfortable to the touch and avoids hitting critical thermal throttling limits.
Final Thoughts
What stands out most in our testing isn’t just the peak speed, but rather the consistency. Many compact drives can hit high numbers for a few seconds before thermal throttling or cache exhaustion sends speeds plummeting. The Dual Portable SSD, however, maintained a commendable sustained write floor of roughly 670 MB/s. This makes it a viable solution for demanding tasks like editing high-resolution videos directly off the drive or moving massive game libraries, rather than just being a temporary transport for small documents.
From a design perspective, the metallic red finish is more than just an aesthetic choice; it acts as a functional heatsink. Keeping internal temperatures at 61°C while the exterior remains a comfortable 41.1°C is a testament to clever engineering. It solves the “hot-to-the-touch” issue that plagues many high-performance miniature drives.
However, the design isn’t without its quirks. The decision to use un-tethered, non-sealed translucent caps is a minor point of friction. In a “dual-purpose” world where this drive might be swapped between a smartphone and a PC multiple times a day, the risk of misplacing a cap is high. We would have loved to see a sliding mechanism or at least a lanyard loop to keep the unit whole.
