MediaTek has announced the Kompanio 540, a new octa-core processor aimed at powering the next generation of thin, ultra-portable student Chromebooks. The chip is designed to deliver a significant boost in performance and power efficiency, enabling all-day battery life for demanding classroom environments.
The Kompanio 540 processor features two high-performance Arm Cortex-A78 CPUs, a dual-core graphics engine, and support for modern LPDDR5 memory and fast UFS 3.1 storage. MediaTek states this combination will allow students to multitask seamlessly, moving between web browsing, media streaming, and even more demanding STEM applications like Tinkercad and Minecraft Education Edition without lag.

A key focus of the new chip is battery life. The company claims the Kompanio 540’s power-efficient design offers 35% longer battery life compared to its competition, allowing for fanless, quiet, and cool-running devices that can last an entire school day.
The launch was endorsed by Google, with John Maletis, VP of ChromeOS, stating, “We’re excited to see the MediaTek Kompanio 540 power more Chromebooks and bring a balance of power and efficiency to more users.”
Chromebooks featuring the new MediaTek Kompanio 540 are expected to be available starting in January 2026.
