ASRock Issues Response to AM5 Stability and CPU Failures

Following months of escalating reports of “dead” systems, ASRock has issued an official response regarding the catastrophic failure of AMD Ryzen™ 9000 series processors on its AM5 motherboard platforms.

While the company’s February 5, 2026, statement uses cautious language like “monitoring performance and behavior,” the reality on the ground is far more severe. Independent investigators and users on platforms like Reddit have documented a growing number of permanent CPU deaths, leading enthusiasts to dub certain ASRock models “murderboards“.

A Critical Stability Crisis

The controversy centers on reports of systems suddenly failing to POST, often displaying a “00” error code and leaving the processor permanently inoperable. Key details of the investigation include:

  • Aggressive BIOS Defaults: Investigations by outlets like Gamers Nexus suggest that ASRock’s default BIOS settings, specifically Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) parameters, pushed Electrical Design Current (EDC) and Thermal Design Current (TDC) limits far beyond safe tolerances.
  • Voltage Spikes: “Shadow voltages” and overly aggressive power delivery profiles appear to be the primary culprits, effectively “frying” the silicon of high-end chips like the Ryzen 9 9950X and the 9800X3D.
  • Widespread Impact: While reports initially focused on high-end X870E and B850 boards, the issue has been observed across the 800-series and even some updated 600-series motherboards.

ASRock’s Response and Firmware Fixes

In its latest statement, ASRock confirms it is working in “seamless coordination with AMD” to validate system stability. The company has already begun rolling out BIOS updates (notably version 3.25 and newer) aimed at dialing back these aggressive power limits.

Warranty Concerns

For those with “bricked” systems, the path to a resolution remains complicated. While ASRock is offering warranty support for the motherboards, many report being redirected to AMD for CPU replacements, as the motherboard manufacturer’s liability for the damaged processors remains a point of contention.

ASRock is urging all AM5 owners to update their BIOS immediately and has encouraged those with failed hardware to contact their Technical Support Department directly.
