Globe has launched Voice over LTE (VoLTE) roaming services in key destinations across Asia-Pacific and the United States, with plans for further expansion in the third quarter of this year. This strategic move ensures uninterrupted high-quality voice calls and text messaging for Globe customers traveling abroad, even as foreign networks phase out older 2G and 3G technologies.
As of July, Globe’s VoLTE roaming is available in Japan (via Softbank), Australia (Optus), Hong Kong (CSL), Taiwan (Taiwan Mobile), Macau (CTM), and the USA (T-Mobile and AT&T). The company also plans to extend the service to Italy through partnerships with TIM and Wind.
VoLTE technology allows users to make high-definition voice calls, send texts, and use mobile data simultaneously over LTE networks. This provides faster call setup times and improved connectivity without additional costs beyond standard roaming rates.
Paula Rivera-Castillo, Head of Globe International Business, emphasized the importance of staying connected while traveling: “With VoLTE roaming, Globe ensures that our customers stay fully connected wherever they are, whether making calls for real-time updates or receiving important text notifications such as OTPs from their most-used apps.”
To use VoLTE roaming, customers need a VoLTE-capable device, an account provisioned for the service, and an LTE signal from Globe’s roaming partners. Globe advises customers to check their device compatibility and enable VoLTE in their settings before traveling.
Enabling Globe VoLTE for International Calls
To use VoLTE (Voice over LTE) for calls while traveling internationally:
- Apple: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data > turn on VoLTE
- Samsung: Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > turn on VoLTE Calls
- Huawei: Settings > Mobile Network > Mobile Data > turn on VoLTE Calls
Note:
- Data roaming is not necessary
- Standard roaming rates apply for calls and texts
- No extra fees for VoLTE usage
- Prepaid customers need an active data roaming plan to access LTE
