Globe has successfully completed the first-ever satellite-powered SMS trial in the Philippines, taking a major step forward in connecting regions with limited or no network coverage. The trial, conducted in Zambales, is part of Globe’s ongoing mission to provide communication services in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs).

Pioneering Use of Satellite Technology

In this pioneering effort, Globe used regular mobile devices with Globe and TM SIM cards to send text messages via Lynk Global Inc.’s low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites. This marks a significant advancement in ensuring consistent mobile service for remote locations, offering reliable communication even where traditional infrastructure is lacking.

For the first time, everyday mobile users with both prepaid and postpaid accounts were able to connect directly to a satellite to send SMS, an important development in a country like the Philippines, where the geography makes network coverage difficult in certain regions.

Live Demonstration of ‘Cell Towers in Space’

The demonstration took place in a network dead zone at Lake Mapanuepe, Zambales, using Lynk’s LEO satellites, dubbed “cell towers in space.” These satellites are designed to provide global connectivity directly to standard mobile phones, without the need for any special modifications or equipment.

Addressing Connectivity Challenges in Remote Areas

This achievement cements Globe’s commitment to broadening its coverage, especially in underserved rural areas, where the installation of conventional cell towers poses significant logistical challenges.

Globe x Lynk Successfully Test Satellite SMS in the PH 2

Gerhard Tan, Senior Director and Head of Technology Strategy and Innovations at Globe, emphasized the importance of this accomplishment: “This is a pivotal step in our efforts to close the digital gap, ensuring that every Filipino, no matter where they are, can remain connected.”

Future Plans and Continued Innovation

Globe plans further trials in Mindanao this month, testing the technology in various conditions to solidify its integration into the company’s network. With more than 500 GIDAs already within its service reach, Globe aims to incorporate this satellite solution into its services nationwide.

The company’s successful satellite SMS trial not only sets the stage for more widespread connectivity but also reinforces its role as a leader in technological advancement in the Philippines.
